The best safety concepts in road traffic are honored every year. This year, a Carinthian invention has won the renowned EU Safety Prize and will triumph all over the world.
They are elliptical, cheap and above all can save lives: we are talking about ground markings for motorcyclists on dangerous bends. “80 percent fewer motorcycle accidents in these bends – that speaks for itself. There are fewer injuries and less property damage. With this simple measure, accidents can be prevented quickly, cost-effectively and effectively,” explains Martin Winkelbauer, safety expert at the Board of Directors for Road Safety (KFV). This visual orientation aid helps cyclists find the ideal driving line in risky bends.
Invention comes from Carinthia
Exactly this invention comes from Carinthia – more precisely from the Carinthian state government and will be used throughout Europe in the future. Gerald Höher, the creator of the idea: “I am particularly pleased that thanks to the scientific discussion of the KFV as a professionally recognized institute, ground markings for motorcycles can now become even more widespread and that we can prevent many motorcycle accidents in the future.” The reason for this is that the idea was nominated for the European Road Safety Award – in the motorcyclist category – and took first place.
Some EU countries such as Germany and Slovenia have already adopted the concept. But life-saving floor markings are also used in Australia.
