The flooding operations in September are being meticulously analyzed and evaluated. Lessons learned: communication with hydrologists and meteorologists needs to be improved in the future.
It has been two months since the devastating flood, but the consequences are still clearly noticeable in many places. Now, of course, the emphasis has long been on preventing such disasters in the future; the analysis of the flood is in full swing.
Operations are screened
Same with the fire brigade. “In our staff we work intensively on alarm chains and prediction models,” explains State Fire Chief Martin Boyer. The events of September have already given us one conclusion: the Florianis want to strengthen communication with hydrology and meteorologists. “So that we are even better informed, better prepared and even better armed,” says Boyer.
Draw the right conclusions
The country is also working at full speed with the fire brigade to draw the right conclusions. “We rely on expertise from theory and practice – that is, on emergency services who have secured dams and fought floods, but also on hydrologists and hydraulic engineering experts,” says State Vice President Stephan Pernkopf. The hydraulic engineering laboratory in Vienna plays a central role, where up to 10,000 liters of water flow through a test channel every second. This enables comprehensive analyzes of river design, flow control and engineering measures for flood protection. Aerial photographs taken during the disaster to document the water stop lines and the dams should also help.
First measures already
As an immediate measure, it was decided to purchase extra powerful pumps for the fire brigade. The expansion of flood protection will continue until 2040, for which one billion euros has been allocated. Pernkopf: “A third of the amount will be invested in more retention jaws and river widening to give the water more space.”
