Patrol blocked – UN soldiers come under fire in Lebanon

Date:

Soldiers from the UN peacekeeping mission UNIFIL in Lebanon have again come under fire. About 40 shots were fired near Maarakeh in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL said. The troops were previously hindered during their patrol.

At least one person was armed. However, the soldiers managed to continue their patrol. The shootings took place about an hour later on Saturday. These “probably came from non-state actors.” No one was injured in the incident.

In recent weeks, soldiers from the observer mission have repeatedly found themselves stuck between the fronts in the fighting between the Israeli forces and Hezbollah (see video above). The peacekeeping force has been stationed in Lebanon since 1978 and consists of approximately 10,000 soldiers and civilians. Since 2001, Austria has been participating in the Blue Helmets in Lebanon with a logistics contingent and 160 to 170 members of the federal army.

Lebanese soldier killed
Meanwhile, a Lebanese soldier was killed in an Israeli attack on the south. Three other forces were injured, one seriously, the army said on Platform X. The Israeli army attacked a post in the city.

Lebanese media also unanimously reported on Sunday about an Israeli airstrike in Beirut. The attack is said to have targeted the office of the Baath Party, which is active in several Arab countries, including as a party of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.

Residents did not take the warning seriously
Clouds of smoke enveloped the streets. Contrary to usual practice, the Israeli army did not issue an evacuation call to the affected district to help civilians get to safety. According to the Ministry of Health, one person was killed and three others were injured. Residents of a neighboring property received a warning but did not take it seriously, it was said.
