Metropolis in fear – Strongest typhoon in 75 years hits Shanghai

Date:

With heavy rain and strong gusts of wind, Typhoon “Bebinca” hit the Chinese city of Shanghai on Monday morning (local time) – and paralyzed it.

State television published photos of avenues of fallen trees. “Bebinca” is the strongest of the 11 typhoons that have hit the financial metropolis in the past 75 years, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The Central Weather Authority has issued the highest warning level. According to meteorologists, winds probably reached 150 km/h near the center of the storm.

All trains and flights cancelled
Authorities halted long-distance train and ferry services, canceled all flights at international airports and closed highway entrances, Chinese state television reported. There were initially no reports of deaths, injuries or major damage.

The neighbouring coastal provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu in eastern China and Anhui in the hinterland will also feel the effects of the typhoon. Authorities had issued warnings in advance. Thousands of people came to emergency shelters in the affected areas as a precaution.

Mid-Autumn Festival Holidays
The typhoon is hitting China during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, when millions of Chinese travel across the country. Just over a week ago, Typhoon ‘Yagi’ hit southern China, causing widespread damage and killing several people. The storm continued towards Southeast Asia, heading for Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand, where hundreds of people died in floods or accidents.
