Thousands of people have taken to the streets in dozens of cities across the United States protest against Supreme Court ruling this Friday eliminated federal protections for the right to abortion, allowing several states to restrict that right.
One of the most massive protests was that of the capital of the United States, where hundreds of people gathered for hours in front of the Supreme Court to shout “My body, my decision!” or “Let’s tear down the Tribunal!” Similar slogans have been heard in more than 70 locations across the US, according to the CNN network’s count.
They take to the streets against the judgment of the Most High
Some were organized for Friday night by groups like Planned Parenthood, the organization that operates the largest network of reproductive health clinics in the United States; but others spontaneously came forward with women gathering to raise their voices.
The protests were especially numerous in the major US cities such as New York where thousands of people have gathered in Washington Square Park, a central square that traditionally hosts political rallies and demonstrations.
In Los Angeles, California, protesters they blocked the traffic from the city centerwhile in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, thousands gathered in front of the emblematic City Hall and protested in federal court in Austin, Texas.
Hundreds of other people took to the streets of Atlanta, Georgia in two separate demonstrations that gathered at the foot of the state parliament.
Most Marches have developed peacefully, although isolated incidents were recorded in the city of Phoenix, Arizona. Police dispersed with tear gas demonstrators gathered in front of the Arizona legislature violently slamming the windows of the building, something that had forced state senators to interrupt the session.
End of free abortion
The Supreme Court ruling against abortion has caused great confusion and clinics in some states, such as the one in Arizonahave stopped performing abortions for fear of criminal consequences.
Meanwhile, abortion is now illegal in nine states (Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wisconsin).
They were all previously approved laws designed to ban abortion and that they came into effect as soon as the Supreme Court decision was made public.
Planned Parenthood, which operates the largest network of reproductive health clinics in the US, estimates that: 26 states will eventually ban the right to abortionin a matter of days, weeks or months.
