A guitar that was one of Beatles guitarist George Harrison’s favorite instruments at the start of his career has been auctioned in the US for a million dollars (about 950,000 euros).
According to Julien’s auction house, the highest bid came in by telephone. With commission, the sales price is 1.27 million dollars (approximately 1.2 million euros). The estimated price before the auction was US$600,000 to US$800,000 (the equivalent of approximately US$570,000 to US$760,000).
Harrison’s most used guitar in his early years
Harrison, who died in 2001, wrote music history with the electric guitar ‘Futurama’, which he bought in Liverpool in 1959. According to Julien, it was Harrison’s most used guitar during the early years of the Beatles.
According to Beatles expert Andy Babiuk, Harrison used the instrument in more than 324 performances, including the Fab Four’s appearances in Hamburg clubs in the early 1960s.
Two-day auction in Nashville
The electric guitar, which was auctioned with the worn-out original guitar case, went under the hammer during a two-day auction in the nation’s capital Nashville, Tennessee. There was more than 1,000 pieces of music memorabilia for sale, including previous possessions from Prince, Eric Clapton, Freddie Mercury, Johnny Cash, Katy Perry and Madonna.
