The disappointment of many American citizens with the outcome of the elections is so great that many are now actually considering leaving the country. The small Italian community of Olloai, which became known for selling houses for the symbolic price of 1 euro, also feels this and is experiencing a veritable flood of requests from the United States.
“Are you tired of global politics? It’s time to plan your European stay in the paradise of Sardinia,” says the 1,700-member community’s website in English.
The mayor of Sardinia’s municipality, Francesco Columbu, explained that the website liveinollolai.com was created specifically “to meet the rehousing needs of American citizens after the elections.” Columbu wants to tackle the problem of depopulation and renovate abandoned houses.
The success exceeds the mayor’s expectations
The success of the initiative exceeds the mayor’s expectations. “Within 24 hours we received 30,000 applications from people in the US interested in the $1 houses. Our website was visited by 150,000 people,” the mayor said, according to media reports.
Tempting offer with conditions
Ollolai, in the heart of the island, started renting houses a few years ago for the symbolic price of one euro. There are approximately 30 homes available, plus business space. The initiative is aimed at Italians and buyers from abroad.
The prerequisite is the willingness to move to the community, but also proof of a life project in Ollolai, which will be verified during an interview. The incentive is awarded for five years, after which the rental costs will be in line with the market, but will not exceed approximately 250 euros per month.
Local boss struggles with populationshrunk
The aim is to provide an immediate response to the problem of population decline, including through state and regional initiatives aimed at promoting village living. Mayor Columbu emphasized that they want to help people discover the other side of Sardinia, its interior, its archeology and its immense cultural heritage.
Characteristic of the village, which looks back on 1,000 years of history, include the longevity of the population with several centenarians, but also the unspoilt forests and meadows.
So far, it is mainly popular with the French and British
Ollolai already has experience selling properties at ridiculous prices. In the first phase of the project, 30 homes were awarded for the symbolic price of one euro, which are now being restored.
“Our initiative has aroused a lot of interest, especially from the French and British. Declarations of interest have also been received from Norway,” reports Michele Cadeddu, head of the cooperative that is developing the Euro House project on behalf of the municipality of Ollolai.
