Home DNA tests are becoming increasingly popular. You can use it to search for traces in your family tree. However, an American woman makes an unpleasant discovery: Jenna Rose finds out that her grandmother is a wanted child murderer.
When one of her friends received a DNA kit for Christmas, Rose became curious: she wanted to try it out and learn more about her ancestors, the woman said on TikTok.
A year after the test, the police called
Two years ago, she ordered a DNA test from Ancestry. “At first everything was normal, but about a year later I received a phone call,” the American describes the events. A police officer answered, which made her quite upset. “I thought to myself, what have I done, and I panicked,” Rose said
Jenna Rose’s video on TikTok:
She was eventually told that police had discovered she was related to a murder victim in a case that took place 25 years ago. A dead child was found in a toilet pit at a campground in Garnet Lake.
Relationship with murder victim discovered
When her DNA was uploaded to a global database, the connection to the cold case was discovered. However, because the murder victim was only distantly related to her – police eventually took a DNA sample from her mother to solve the mystery – her mother was determined to be a close relative.
This eventually led to a suspect: Rose’s grandmother. She had never met her; it wasn’t until she was a teenager that she even learned her name.
The grandmother, Nancy Gerwatowski, immediately confessed that she was the mother of the murdered baby. She said she gave birth to the child alone in her home. The police assume that she also suffocated there. Gerwatowski then allegedly ‘discarded’ the dead child, who was only 36 to 42 weeks old, at the campsite. However, due to a lack of witnesses and information, the investigation had to be stopped at the time.
It wasn’t until 2017 that investigators re-examined the case. Skeletal parts of the victim were sent to a laboratory, where a DNA profile was made. This was also compared to data from the Ancestry database.
Grandma has to answer in court
Police believe the death of the child, named “Baby Garnet” in the investigation, could have been prevented if Gerwatowski had sought medical attention. The 60-year-old is therefore being tried for murder and concealing a death. If found guilty, she faces life in prison.
