On Thursday evening, an accomplice of a smuggling gang began his next refugee journey through Hungary. He drove away in a silver Mercedes with three Syrians. The destination was Austria. Long before the smuggler approached the border, officials from the cross-border Operation Fox noticed the illegal transport. The special unit gave chase. The perpetrator accelerated and eventually raced across the border in Nikitsch.
The escape ended in Deutschkreutz
The wild escape came to an end at the cemetery in Deutschkreutz. The tractor Mercedes collided with an Operation Fox car, both veering off the road and ending up in a field. A second commercial vehicle “Füchse” was involved in the accident.

“Exactly at 2:12 a.m. we were woken up and warned to rescue the accident vehicles,” says the Deutschkreutz-Girm fire brigade. A police jeep rested on stone blocks.

“We were able to clean up the large chunks with the help of a lifting bag. “The Jeep was then ready to drive again, just like the two other cars,” the emergency services said. The smuggler – the suspect is believed to be from Moldova – was arrested and brought in for questioning. The three refugees from Syria had to be cared for. What would happen next for them was initially unclear. As of editorial deadline on Thursday, the immigrants had not yet applied for asylum in Austria.
