SPÖ leader Andreas Babler is said to be “not happy” with an FPÖ-SPÖ government in Styria. In an interview with the “Krone”, he explains why he does not insist on taxes on millionaires in general, but why every euro must be turned over twice in the coalition negotiations – and whether he believes that the former SPÖ federal party leader Max Lercher will do so . are making a comeback in Styria.
“Kron”: Mr Babler, the SPÖ is now in third place in five states and at federal level. When will the comeback you promised when you took office come?
Andreas Babler: We always work to be the first to cross the finish line. But we are currently experiencing a strengthening of right-wing extremists and right-wing populists, not only in Austria, but everywhere. Obviously our goal is to become stronger and we cannot be satisfied that we have only kept our result from last time. But you have to look at the general circumstances under which such a result comes about: we had competition from the left, we were able to close it off. People are rightly angry about massive inflation, deteriorating healthcare and the lack of real solutions to the migration problem. Populist and far-right parties across Europe are offering simple answers to these problems and profiting from them. Unfortunately, we failed to capitalize on this dissatisfaction with those in power during the last election dispute – so we will work even harder to actually solve these problems in the future.
