Breakthrough in the Middle East? The Islamist-Palestinian organization Hamas and the secular Fatah party that rules the West Bank have agreed to form a committee to govern the Gaza Strip after the end of the war.
According to the plan seen by the AFP news agency on Tuesday and which must still be approved by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the committee would consist of 10 to 15 independent people.
The committee should therefore decide in coordination with the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah on the areas of humanitarian aid, education, health care, economy and reconstruction.
It will also manage the Palestinian side of the Rafah checkpoint on the border with Egypt. It is the only border crossing in the coastal strip that does not border Israel.
Hamas expelled Fatah from the Gaza Strip
Hamas and Fatah met for Egyptian-mediated talks in Cairo. The Fatah delegation would return to Ramallah on Tuesday to seek final approval from Palestinian President Abbas, negotiators from both sides told AFP.
The two warring Palestinian organizations fought a brief, bloody war for power in 2007, after which the Islamist Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip. Fatah rules the West Bank.
The Israeli government has made the destruction of Hamas in the Gaza Strip one of its main war goals. She has also spoken out strongly against the Palestinian Authority’s role in post-war Gaza.
