A mysterious, fatal disease – called ‘Disease X’ – that mainly affects children has been spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo for several weeks. The first laboratory results should now provide clarity. Experts warn of a serious crisis.
The dangerous disease first appeared in the southwest of the Central African country at the end of October. More than 130 patients have died after flu-like symptoms. Infants and small children are particularly affected.
Violent version of the seasonal flu?
According to official information, the analyzes of the samples taken in recent days could be available by Saturday. Congolese Health Minister Roger Kamba does not rule out that it is a particularly strong version of the seasonal flu.
“Close supervision necessary”
This is supported by the fact that the first cases of illness in Congo were recorded at the beginning of the flu season. At the same time, according to Kamba, the authorities are very alert. The minister emphasized that close supervision is necessary.
Symptoms of ‘Disease X’ include fever, headache, anemia and breathing problems. In addition to taking samples, experts tried to call on the population to take hygiene and distancing measures. It is not yet known whether the disease can be transmitted only through physical contact or through other routes.
