Iran says it has launched a military satellite into space. The satellite, named ‘Fakhr-1’, was placed into orbit on Friday using a ‘Simorgh’ launch vehicle developed by the mullahs’ regime, state news agency IRNA reported.
There was also a space tug on board the launch vehicle. According to the information, the satellite is already in orbit and has already sent a signal to ground stations. According to Tasnim news agency, the satellite is named after Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was killed four years ago during an intelligence operation allegedly carried out by Israel. Known as the “father of Iran’s nuclear program,” Fakhrizadeh was a general in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and a missile expert.
The Islamic Republic has already launched several satellites into space to collect data on weather, natural disasters and agriculture. At the end of February 2024, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards reported a successful satellite launch from Iranian soil.
The US and the EU are following developments with great concern
Tehran claims its satellite program does not pursue military objectives. However, because the program is led and implemented by the Revolutionary Guards, there are international doubts about this representation. The Revolutionary Guard is de facto the country’s second armed force and is considered much more influential and powerful than the traditional army. Furthermore, the US and EU recently warned that the same technology used for the space program could also be used for ballistic missiles.
