The rebels who have entered Syria in an overwhelming manner are led by the Islamist alliance HTSHayat Tahrir al Sham, together with them the group of Syrian militias grouped under the name Syrian National Army, supported by Türkiye.

Both groups jointly launched the November 28 offensive and they took control of Aleppo, the second city of Syria, and Hama, the fourth city.

HTS founder Abu Muhammad al-Jolani took part in the Iraqi uprising against the United States, within the Islamic State group. In its original form as Al-Nasra, HTS was connected to Al Qaeda. But in 2016, both organizations broke off their relations.

HTS is now the most powerful rebel faction in Syria. The United States has classified it as a terrorist group and there are concerns that human rights may be violated in the areas under their control. Executions are feared for those accused of belonging to a rival group or on charges of blasphemy and adultery.

The Syrian National Army, made up of pro-Turkish militias, is interested in creating a buffer zone on the border to keep out Kurdish militants, who are enemies of Türkiye. The government in Ankara has been one of the main pillars of support overthrow of Syrian President Al Assadalthough he has recently taken a more conciliatory stance.

Now HTS and the Syrian National Army are allies, but in the past they have also been rivals, and in the future their positions may diverge.
