Natalia Carrero: “A character is a paper life that must be respected as if it were flesh and blood”

Date:

Natalia Carrero was born in Barcelona in 1970, was born again in Madrid in 1997 and became a writer in Caballo de Troya in 2008. The label used by publisher Constantino Bertolo to discover new voices at the time was the place from which it originated. In that first novel, I’m a box Appeared Nadila, a writer in the shadow of Claire Lispector, who sought her voice in battle with words during life or death.

Almost fifteen years later Carrero signs Other, Her sixth book – a product that also includes graphic novels and children’s books – in which the protagonist is another woman who writes: Monica. Monica is a woman suffering from her brother’s mental illness, to whom he addresses. He is a wealthy mother and wife who wants to be productive and invent work; It’s not that he makes a claim that he has, but he creates one of his own size, though there is a part that is a claim. Monica has a partner: Drink.

“I can say that Monica was the character who resided in me for the longest time, whom I was most opposed to giving up space, the more I tried to silence her, did not see her or did not want to see her. “The projection of the interlocutors, the readers and the readers in search,” explains Carrero, who first portrayed the protagonist’s “moderate alcoholism” in several texts for the average Ctxt. The author wrote a monologue, which served to observe the text “audience reaction”. From there he began to think that “it was probably worth the exhibition and release of Monique” that he had inside.

All the characters in Natalia Carrero’s novels have something in common, their intersection with the oppression that is present in women. Everyone understands as much as they can. Is included Improper room (Caballo de Troya, 2011) The protagonists seem to have a normal, contented life, but the author’s gaze reveals a huge inner emptiness in them, a pain related to what awaits people, what they represent.

“Character is a life of paper, this life should be respected like any flesh and blood,” says the writer. “How do I want to relate to people, to life? Fluid as hypocritical and as sincere as possible, even if it is painful or requires effort and more generosity, not only from brilliant words but also from deeds,” he adds.

2016 was an important year for Carrero. Almost at the same time, two different works appeared, which helped to raise his voice: I think (Rat, 2016) and comics Rebellious letter (Infinite Beauty, 2016). In this expedition, which he himself makes to the visceral center of the relationship between words and himself, the author becomes a line and pursues himself in a painted world, in a parallel plane, where words also become lines, and, in this way, both. They coexist in one plane and therefore coexist more, say, on equal terms. As a result of this research, pictures are inserted in his novels, but he also applies the narrative in graphic format, as he did Rebellious letter Or in a children’s story accompanied by Belen Gopeg Clouds (We Are the Books, 2021).

Other This is a fragmentary book: there are pictures, stories, long, different formats, cuts and cuts. “Since I started writing with the intention of saying something for which I had no words other than the need to share, writing and life are inseparable for me,” he explains. “From here I write as much as I can, time and context are multifunctional, interrupted, fast and unfair. I do not believe in waterproof labels and at the moment I am not the same person who writes the meaning of a sentence. I try to express my opinion on my meaning of time, meanings and movements, I think it pushes me forward, I avoid comforts that can be traps and I believe that we have already done and written everything. No, there is always a lot. To do. Other It is written with its wounds, assemblies and mixtures, it is like this, the form and the background are as inseparable as my body from these events as I write. ”

Three themes are the focus of his recent story: mental health, addiction, and instability, if these three are not really one. Monica drinks at all times, loses consciousness and control, sometimes hiding and sometimes not. “Glu Glu”, Is the onomatopoeia throughout the book. “Alcoholism is the drug I have known most since I was thirteen, the one that has caused me the most problems and pain of all kinds, the one that has bothered me the most,” Carrero admits. “Now I have come out to write, specifically, as a Western woman, a fifty-year-old, white, middle-class mother who, of course, offers her human imperfection to her sons and daughters as they are. “Come from there.”

After himself Memories of a good drunk, In the second part of the book, Monica offers a sticker album for other drinkers. “After accumulating the spotlights, he decides to hand over the microphone to others, any drunk, anonymous, to hear his voice. Monica has already told us that she watched, listened, studied and compared them to herself. “It’s been a long time,” the author explains. For example Blanca, journalist Freelancing, The 37-year-old mother drank for swimming, the father did it to gather strength, he does it in an instrumental way, he says, to calibrate life from a changed perspective. Or furniture restorer Teresa, 48, for whom 24-hour restraint will turn into a hell of thoughts and memories.

While Natalia Carrero started collecting material Other Three years ago, before the pandemic began, it was called romance Drink. He broke it in custody: “It seemed to have evaporated,” he says. There he re-made it closer to the collage – “Unreadable” – which he named Evaporated novel. “I tried to publish it after my arrest. Now I’m glad it did not come out. The denials made me reconsider it all, I took it and transcribed it, translating it back into the text.” After her arrest, Monica returned to the Ctxt screens with an episode titled We will not write a novel. Which he did and is now published by Tránsito.

In order for a woman today to be able to dedicate herself to writing, she must “let go of the scenery,” she says. “To ‘dedicate oneself to writing’ means not a posture but a lot of daily action that awakens the conscience, comforts and imagines change.” between them I’m a box And Other, The author “years have passed,” he says to himself. Years are not only time, but also “reading-re-reading”. “Of course, I have learned very little, but I have learned something very important and long-lasting that we must repeat and listen to well: we must take care of the planet and its surroundings,” he warns.
