The G7 countries have announced new sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. The White House also reported in Elmau that G7 leaders are coordinating and extending sanctions against Russia to hinder that country’s access to key raw materials, materials, services and technologies from their own economies. The United States will also increase sanctions against Russia’s arms sector to limit its ability to “limit the war material it has lost so far in its brutal war against Ukraine.” They will also apply punitive tariffs of some $2.3 billion on some 570 groups of Russian products. US President Joe Biden and other G7 leaders want the revenue from those punitive tariffs used to directly support Ukraine in its war against the Russian invader.
The statement from Biden’s office in Elmau underlines that G7 leaders agree to punish all those responsible for war crimes and human rights abuses in Ukraine. The US State Department will ban some 500 Kremlin representatives from entering the national territory “for threatening or violating Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity or political independence, as well as for suppressing dissent in Russia. ” The note emphasizes the G7’s determination to help cover Ukraine’s short-term trade deficits. Also to support Ukraine financially, humanitarianly, militarily and diplomatically “for as long as necessary”, including with the provision of modern weapon systems.
