That could have ended very badly: a hiker fell during the descent from the Buchberg viewing platform in Lasberg (Upper Austria) and remained injured in the cold at minus three degrees for 45 minutes until two women heard his cries for help.
You don’t want to imagine how the injured person would otherwise have survived a night in the freezing cold. The hiker fell during the descent from the Buchberg viewing platform in Lasberg on Friday evening and could not continue. The man could no longer get help himself.
According to the operational report of the Lasberg fire brigade, the hiker had to wait about 45 minutes in a forest at minus three degrees before rescue arrived.
The accident site can only be reached on foot
Two women who also happened to be at Buchberg and walking through the valley heard the injured man’s cries for help and alerted the emergency services. Because the accident site is steep and cannot be reached by vehicle, rescue and fire services had to walk the last 200 meters to the injured person.
The hiker was “treated and stabilized by the emergency physician and the Red Cross,” the Lasberg fire brigade reported. Only after an hour and a half could the difficult operation be completed.
