A woman was set on fire on the New York subway while she slept and died shortly afterwards. The terrible crime took place on Sunday morning: the police were able to arrest a suspect.
The perpetrator sneaked up on the victim around 7:30 am, after which he set fire to the woman’s clothing with a lighter and fled the scene. “Within seconds the clothing was completely on fire,” police commissioner Jessica Tisch told the press.
Police officers on patrol ‘smoked and saw smoke’ and eventually discovered the burning victim in the subway. The officers extinguished the fire and raised the alarm, but the emergency services could only determine that the woman was dead.

“Without the knowledge of the police, the suspect had remained at the scene and was sitting on a bench on the platform directly in front of the train carriage. “The police officers’ body-worn cameras provided a very clear and detailed image of the killer,” the police spokeswoman said. The suspect appeared calm as he watched his victim die.
The suspect was eventually caught on another train a few hours later. The lighter was also found on him, which probably served as a daytime weapon. The deceased woman has not yet been identified.
