Underestimated danger – accidents with e-scooters in Vienna will triple in 2021

Date:

E-scooters as a convenient mode of transport are becoming increasingly popular in the cities of Austria and especially in Vienna. However, rules are often ignored and speed is apparently underestimated. This is evident from the accident statistics. Last year there were a total of 198 accidents in the federal capital, most of them injured. In 2020 there were “only” 70 accidents.

According to the German Road Safety Board (KfV), drivers or pedestrians were injured in 159 accidents involving e-scooters last year. This year, the police recorded 50 traffic accidents in Vienna in the first quarter alone, involving e-scooter drivers and causing injuries. The electric scooters can not only pose a danger during use – they are often simply parked in the middle of the sidewalk and thus pose a dangerous tripping hazard.

22 accidents involving e-bikes ended in death
The increasing popularity of e-bikes is also accompanied by an increase in the number of accidents. According to the KfV, 9,600 people across Austria had to be treated last year after an accident involving an e-bike. 22 people died. “Because of the higher speed, accidents are not only more frequent, but also more serious,” explains Patrick Madl, insurance expert at the comparison portal durchblicker.

He recommends private accident insurance to protect you against the financial consequences of an accident. “Even in serious leisure accidents, only private accident insurance can help. Because the statutory health insurers only reimburse the costs of the first treatment in the event of accidents in leisure,” Madl emphasizes in a broadcast. Private insurance protects not only against accidents with e-bikes or scooters, but also for a wide range of sports activities. and leisure activities and in the household.
