Nikki tried it: sparkling things for the Christmas tree, straight from the oven

Date:

In addition to other glass works of art, hand-blown Christmas baubles are also made in Rattenberg, Tyrol. “Krone” editor Nicole Greiderer tried making her own Christmas tree decorations.

Nikolai and Vassile aren’t exactly dressed for Christmas with their shorts and T-shirts. But if you want to make Christmas tree balls from glass, you have to work with heat. The hot air literally shimmers towards me from the glass oven in the Kisslinger Kristall-Glas workshop in Rattenberg. “The working temperature is around 1200 degrees Celsius,” says boss Hannes Kisslinger, pointing to the inside of the oven. It contains liquid glass, mainly made of quartz sand.
