Flags at half-mast – after plane crash: day of mourning in Azerbaijan

A day of mourning has begun in Azerbaijan following the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane in Kazakhstan. The country’s flags were flying at half-mast. Cultural events scheduled for Thursday in theaters and concert halls under the Ministry of Culture have been postponed.

The bodies of the killed passengers and crew will be returned to Azerbaijan.

According to Tengrinews, Russian, Azerbaijani and Kyrgyz nationals are among the injured.

  • The plane with 67 passengers took off from the Azerbaijani capital Baku on Wednesday. The plane was supposed to fly to Grozny, the capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya.
  • For unknown reasons, the plane took off towards the Caspian Sea shortly before landing. The plane eventually crashed on the coast near Aktau in Kazakhstan.
  • According to official information, 38 people were killed in the accident and 29 people survived, some of whom were seriously injured.

According to Russian state news agency TASS, nine injured Russian passengers, including a child, were picked up by a special plane to be treated in Moscow. Her condition is considered serious.

Officially it is said that the passenger plane is suspected to have been damaged by a flock of birds, but newly published photos have experts doubting this statement. Shortly after the crash, Russian bloggers speculated that the plane could have been hit by Russian air defenses. Photos now published show the machine’s elevator and rudder with holes.
