An adverse effect! – Musk’s boycott call drives donations to Wikipedia

Date:

That must have had the opposite effect! Tech billionaire Elon Musk called on people not to donate to the knowledge platform.

On Christmas Eve, a call from Elon Musk on X – formerly Twitter – caused a stir. The tech billionaire called on people to stop making donations to Wikipedia.

He criticized the platform for being “too woke.” The word means ‘vigilance’ against discrimination and grievances. And the website lacks “editorial balance”.

$4.4 million in just three days
But instead of support declining, Wikipedia saw a notable increase in donations.

While up to $900,000 per day was received in the days leading up to the appeal, figures rose to more than $1 million per day during the Christmas holidays.

Over the past three days, the foundation has raised a total of $4.4 million – nearly double what it raised during the same periods over the past three years.
