As if the firefighters in Los Angeles don’t already have their hands full, they now apparently have to go outside to fight the fires. A first arrest has already taken place. Looters also cause problems.
According to American media, the man is homeless. It was unclear why he wanted to start a fire, it was said. But there was also news about a propane gas cylinder that was allegedly seized from the suspect. The homeless man is suspected of starting the Kenneth Fire in the West Hills and Hidden Hills area.
Images from Santa Monica, where several people are said to have lit a fire in a populated area, also spread on social media (see below). The fire brigade has confirmed the action, but further details are not known.
The Los Angeles Police Department would not confirm the arrest in connection with the ‘Kenneth Fire’ – unlike several arrests that occurred following looting. Police in the Los Angeles area have already arrested at least 20 looters, county sheriff Robert Luna said. Police and army patrols would stop anyone entering the evacuated areas. “If you are in any of these areas and have no business being there, you will be arrested,” the sheriff threatened.
Night curfews in evacuation zones
Los Angeles County Representative Kathryn Barger called the looters “opportunists” and told reporters, “I will not stand by and allow an already traumatic experience to become worse.” A nighttime curfew has also been imposed in evacuation zones. Anyone found on the street between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. risks a fine or even a prison sentence of up to six months. Local security forces are now reinforced by National Guard units.
