Severe weather in Carinthia – hurricane winds swept through the municipality of Arriach at 129 km/h

While Tuesday started with bright sunshine, cumulus clouds formed in large parts of Carinthia in the evening, some of which turned into violent storm fronts. 70 fire brigades had to divert for more than 150 operations. A hurricane was even measured in Arriach!

According to the Carinthian State Fire Service Association, the districts of Villach-Land and Villach-Stadt, Feldkirchen and the eastern part of the district of Spittal around Lake Millstatt and Bad Kleinkirchheim are particularly affected. Major power outages occurred in Feldkirchen and Villach. Heavy gusts of wind even covered several roofs in Draustadt and in the Spittal district. In Millstatt, a tin roof even flew across the street and crashed in front of a fountain.

Hurricane winds over Arriach
A hurricane of 129 kilometers per hour was even measured in Arriach on Tuesday evening. “The greatest caution applies here, so we are warning this storm accordingly with the highest warning level! Over the next hour, the cell nucleus will shift further towards the Nockberge and Gurktal Alps, the thunderstorm line generally towards Lower Alps. Carinthia and Upper Styria”, reports the Severe Weather Center (UWZ)

Beach baths closed
For safety reasons, all lidos on Lake Wörthersee had to be evacuated. “In addition, all boats must call at jetties,” says the water rescue service. The water rescue service also focused on the storm warning trip on the Faaker See.

Power cuts, flooding, fallen trees and covered roofs have so far led to more than 150 firefighting deployments in Carinthia. “At the moment, 50 fire brigades are still involved in the clean-up work. Rain is also forecast for the night, which could be particularly heavy in Upper Carinthia,” said chief fire inspector Hans-Jörg Rossbacher of the State Alarm and Warning Center (LAWZ).
