It is unclear why a twelve-year-old opened the safety hood of an automatic sawing machine in Vöcklabruck on Thursday. The consequences were certainly dramatic for the boy. His hand got stuck in the machine and the splitting knife severed the student’s middle finger. He had to undergo emergency surgery in the hospital.
The twelve-year-old had helped his father with firewood work on the edge of a forest in Vöcklabruck on Thursday morning. To make the work easier, they used an automatic sawing machine.
The two divided the work between themselves. While the student operated the machine, the 37-year-old placed the finished firewood into the appropriate boxes.
With hand in cleaver
The boy then suddenly opened the machine’s safety valve. It is unclear why he did this. His hand got stuck in the cleaver and his middle finger was cut off.
The father alerted the emergency services and immediately provided first aid. He then drove the seriously injured man to the B 145, where they waited for the emergency doctor and the Red Cross.
Rescue flight to Linz
After initial care, the twelve-year-old was first taken to the Salzkammergut Klinikum Vöcklabruck and from there flown by helicopter to emergency surgery at the Kepler University Hospital Linz. It was initially unclear whether the attempt to sew his finger back to the child was successful.
