Indonesia joins the BRICS group of countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, as a full member.
Indonesia thus “makes a positive contribution to deepening cooperation in the Global South”. The abbreviation BRICS stands for the first letters of the first five members. At the beginning of 2024, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates were added.
The BRICS group is partly seen as a counterweight to the G7 alliance of leading Western economic powers. Other countries are also pursuing membership.
Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world. According to Brazil, the Southeast Asian island nation had already received the approval of the other members at the BRICS summit in Johannesburg in 2023. However, Jakarta waited for last year’s presidential elections and the formation of a new government before joining.
Trump threatens high tariffs
Newly elected US President Donald Trump recently threatened the BRICS alliance countries with “100 percent tariffs” if they turned away from the US currency as international currency (see video above).
