According to its own statements, the Israeli army probably unintentionally killed two residents of a kibbutz during its operation against the major Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. This is the result of an internal investigation that has now been published.
Tomer Eliaz-Arava and his mother Dikla Arava were killed by their own soldiers in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, the army said on Friday. Civilians and soldiers were interviewed for the research.
The investigation revealed that 17-year-old Tomer Eliaz-Arava was first kidnapped by Hamas fighters and then forced door to door to convince residents to leave their homes. After an hour and a half, the teenager managed to escape and hide.
Soldiers shot at teenagers
Israeli soldiers sent to the attacked kibbutz saw “a suspicious figure” and shot at them. This person was probably Tomer Eliaz-Arava. The military explained that he was therefore “very likely (…) accidentally killed by gunfire (by the Israeli army) due to an identification error.”
Meanwhile, Hamas fighters had kidnapped his mother, Dikla Arava, and taken her in a car to the Gaza Strip. While driving, the vehicle was shot from behind, which “possibly” led to her death, the army statement said. However, in both cases it was not possible to determine the cause of death with absolute certainty, the army said.
Tank shot at house
After the brutal attack by the Islamist-Palestinian organization Hamas on October 7, 2023, the Israeli army launched an investigation. The army feared that several Israelis might have been killed by friendly fire.
In Kibbutz Beeri, which was also hit hard by the attacks, witnesses told Israeli media that an Israeli tank had fired at a house where 14 people were being held by Hamas.
