After plane crash – human remains found in Lake Constance

Date:

Human remains were found this weekend in Lake Constance at a depth of more than 200 meters. They could be passengers from a plane that crashed over the lake in 1957. All the prisoners died at that time.

The ship salvage association Romanshorn (Switzerland) led by Silvan Paganini made a surprising and at the same time moving discovery during work on the wreck of a Swissair DC-3 aircraft at the bottom of Lake Constance.

Victims of a plane crash in the 1950s
At a depth of 210 meters, the team came across remains on Saturday afternoon that may have belonged to the victims of the 1957 plane crash.

The team, which works with the latest underwater and sonar technology, was working this weekend as part of a side project to recover the engine of the crashed Swissair DC-3 HB-IRK.

The plane crashed into Lake Constance on June 18, 1957 for unknown reasons. Four of the nine crew members have not been rescued so far.

“Chaotic situation”
“The situation in the debris field at the bottom of the lake is chaotic,” reports Paganini. With the help of a diving robot, the team documented the find and informed the Thurgau cantonal police on site. A small sample was recovered for further examination and brought ashore in a flag and handed over to authorities.

Paganini was visibly moved: “I didn’t expect that today, 68 years after the crash, we would still find remains. It also raises questions as to why the crash site was not searched more thoroughly at the time.” Out of respect for the victims and their families, the association refrains from providing detailed information about the find. However, Paganini emphasizes its historical and human significance: “With this discovery, perhaps souls can find eternal peace, and families can find closure after decades.”

Further research
The Thurgau cantonal police confirmed the find and, in cooperation with the public prosecutor’s office, transferred it to the Institute for Forensic Medicine in St. Gallen. It is now being investigated whether these are actually human remains and whether they can be attributed to one of the occupants of the Swissair DC-3.
