Damage to nature – hardworking beavers still cause many problems

Date:

Animal rights activists have prevented a beaver family from settling in Jennersdorf. The city now continues to fight the plague.

The beaver, which is strictly protected as a species, often causes extensive damage to cultivated natural landscapes. Especially in Eltendorf and Jennersdorf, people have been struggling for years with the problems left behind by the master wood builder. Nibbled groups of trees pose the least problem for the municipalities.

The undermined soil, which poses a real safety risk, causes many more headaches, warns Jennersdorf city boss Reinhard Deutsch. A dam even endangers a residential area in the southernmost district capital. However, measures to remove beaver dens according to the decision of the Burgenland state government were only partially successful in the communities concerned.

Who is liable for beaver damage?
“It is a recurring problem and not a serious solution,” says Christian Schaberl, the local boss of Eltendorf, who mainly wants clarity on the liability question of who is held financially liable in the event of damage. “The authorities can easily hide behind EU law. But as mayor, I cannot easily justify this in the event of damage,” says Schaberl.

In Jennersdorf the beaver case had already gone one step further. Last year, the city received a decision from the state to capture a beaver family that has made itself at home in the field of flood protection. However, a Viennese animal rights activist took action against this.

The city of Jennersdorf wants to relocate the beaver family
The anger in the municipality is therefore great. Now a new attempt is being made to get a special permit from the state and still get rid of the beavers. According to the responsible department, the process has not yet been completed. Postscript: The intention is also to consult an expert in the field of water management to ask whether the beaver family actually has a significant impact on the flood protection system.

Floods caused the population to decline
According to beaver management, the beaver population in Burgenland has declined following the recent floods last year. According to the last survey in 2021/2022, there were a total of 194 occupied areas with approximately 630 people in 90 municipalities.
