Experienced two world wars – the oldest Austrian woman died at the age of 113

Date:

The oldest Austrian woman probably died on Friday morning. Margarete Tröstl was 113 years old and last lived in the Schrems nursing and care center (Lower Austria).

The woman from the Waldviertel would have been 114 years old on February 26. She was considered the oldest person living in Austria and may even have been the oldest person in a German-speaking country.

As the state of Lower Austria announced, Tröstl was born Margarete Ecker in February 1911 in Gmünd. In her youth she experienced the First World War. “It was a very difficult time. “My brothers and I had to start working very early,” she later recalled.

With her husband, a trained carpenter and officer, Tröstl moved to Vienna, where she worked as a travel assistant at Persil-Werke. After her retirement she returned to the Waldviertel in the early 1970s. Shortly before her 103rd birthday, she moved to the Schrems nursing and care center.

“It was an unforgettable meeting with an impressive personality who had a lot of knowledge and experience, but also a lot of humor,” said the Governor of Lower Austria, Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP). She congratulated Tröstl on her 110th birthday in 2021.
