No insurance – communities are left with burglary damage

Date:

Six people have plundered 65 schools in Upper Austria in recent weeks. However, insurance does not pay for everything. However, demanding reimbursement from the affected schools and teachers makes no sense, because you get nothing from the perpetrators.

“The material damage goes far beyond the loot. The perpetrators received barely more than 150 euros. But the destroyed entrance door alone costs several thousand euros” – in Feldkirchen an der Donau, mayor David Allerstorfer (SP) is angry. The gang of school burglars, which – as reported – had raged throughout Upper Austria since November and had hit 65 educational institutions, was also active in the Mühlviertel during the Christmas holidays.

Even brought a safe
The school principal was the first to notice the mess. The doors of the high school’s main office and the music school were broken open and a safe was also taken. But the burglars also found aerosol cans and sprayed them around the school. “Fortunately, the paint could be washed off with a lot of effort, but that is no fun for the staff,” says the local boss irritated, who has to pay part of the damage from the already overburdened municipal treasury. The insurance only covers the current value of the damaged school equipment, which must be completely replaced.

Cash register looted
The Upper Austrian Education Directorate has also opened the case of a school where a cash register was looted. There was more than the additional insured 1,000 euros in cash. “As a school administrator, the municipality is not responsible for this damage. The school is now considering whether to hold a fundraising campaign,” says the education director, where there is great anger about the six 18 to 22-year-old burglars from the Wels area.

From a purely legal point of view, the insurance pays out the current value of damaged or stolen school equipment. At compulsory schools, the municipality is responsible for the rest. In the case of federal schools, any damage must be covered from their own budget.

Special agreement required
Class funds are not covered by insurance unless a special agreement has been made. The responsibility for safe storage lies with the class teachers. In a lawsuit, the injured parties can claim damages from the six burglars. But it is doubtful whether this can be paid for.
