At an American high school in Nashville, Tennessee, a 17-year-old shot a student and then himself on Wednesday. The shots were fired in the cafeteria and two other people were injured.
According to a police spokesperson, two security officers were in the building, but not near the crime scene.
When they got there, the gunman had already shot himself, the police spokesperson explained.
The school was locked
The school management immediately took safety measures. The school was placed on lockdown while a SWAT team searched the building to ensure there was no further threat. After being cleared by police, students were bussed to Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital, where a reunification center for parents was set up.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee expressed shock at the events and thanked first responders for their quick response. In a statement, he stressed that the state’s thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the school community.
Memories of the mass school shooting
The high school is attended by approximately 2000 students. In late March 2023, a gunman killed three children, each nine years old, and three adults at a private Christian elementary school in Nashville.
