The rare crick Duck of Birdlife was elected Bird of the Year – but the hunt for the animal still stays upright in Styria.
According to Birdlife, it was not so long ago that the cricket – duck was anything but a rare phenomenon in the landscape – after the dock, the smallest duck in Europe, which appears most in Austria with a maximum of 38 centimeters.
According to the expert initiative, this has long changed – dramatically. The fact that thousands of Burgenland Seewinkel come to the spring change in September to mice in these very special rich should not hide that Birdlife in Austria itself only suspects that a Läppische 100 breeding pairs. And therefore, self -explanatory, whose strict protection requires.
You can see it differently in the styric hunting company, in the past year 210 cricks were killed. “And what is not there cannot be collapsed,” you doubt the NGOS counting method. “But the hunters like to make counts where the duck occurs, you can compare that,” says spokeswoman Marion Kranabitl-Sarkleti.
There is also no discussion to hunt the small duck: “You have to leave it to hunt what and how much is killed within the legal framework”. Moreover, the duck can be hunted throughout the EU.
But why don’t the hunters focus on the small duck at all because, unlike perhaps the wild boar, this does not cause agricultural or animal damage? Kranabitl-Sarkleti honestly says, “It tastes good.”
