Imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny says he will spend hours in his new prison under a portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Navalny wrote on Facebook that he had to sew seven hours a day, five days a week, then sit on a wooden bench under the portrait. Supporters describe his new daily life as “torture”.
Even on Sunday, his day off, he had to sit on a wooden bench with other inmates for ten hours, Navalny continued. “It’s called an educational measure.”
“prison in jail”
Navalny was transferred in June from a penal colony in Pokrov to a penal colony in the city of Vladimir 250 kilometers east of Moscow – “one of the most terrifying prisons in Russia” according to his allies. The Kremlin critic himself had described his new prison as a “prison within a prison” and said it was surrounded by convicted murderers. A six meter high fence surrounds his prison barracks.
Navalny is the most prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and became known for exposing corruption cases in Russia. He was arrested at Moscow airport on his return from Germany in January 2021. He had previously been treated in Berlin for poisoning he had contracted in Russia with a neurotoxin from the Novichok group, which he blames on Putin.
