More than a month after the massacre at a Texas elementary school, the Uvalde school district police chief has resigned. According to the broadcaster ABC, he had previously been on leave. The police have been criticized for being “too reluctant” to intervene in the incident.
“I think this is the best decision for Uvalde,” a local newspaper quoted the outgoing police chief as saying. The man sent his letter of resignation to the city. Earlier, the parents of the victims of the massacre had loudly criticized the police. This is only hesitant and would not even answer important questions. Authorities had given conflicting information about the incidents surrounding the police action and had corrected previous statements several times.
Student shot 21 people
At the end of May, an 18-year-old shot and killed 19 children and two teachers at a primary school in Uvalde. He attacked his victims with an assault rifle and was killed by the emergency services after about 75 minutes.
