The two former bodyguards of Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) have left the Cobra special unit. They were taken to police stations for causing an accident after being drunk while on duty.
A spokesman for the prime minister said. These are civil service consequences after a disciplinary procedure. “The officers have left the Cobra, but continue to work for the police,” said Karl Nehammer in the Ö3 program “Frühstück bei mir”. Since the police officers are specialists in counter-terrorism, they should also be held accountable for their actions.

Specifically, the two men allegedly drank alcohol after work in mid-March and started their company car, which was parked in front of the chancellor’s apartment in Vienna-Hietzing. They hit two parked vehicles while leaving a parking lot, resulting in physical injuries. No one was injured. The two police officers who routinely stand in front of the apartment building have reported the accident. One of the two bodyguards is said to have had a blood alcohol level of 1.2, the other refused the alcohol test.

It is believed that the two bodyguards drank the alcohol together with Katharina, Karl Nehammer’s wife, in the Chancellor’s apartment. They would have toasted on an official’s birthday. The accident happened about 45 minutes after the two said goodbye. The service officially ends when the car is returned.
The fact that Katharina Nehammer could be involved in the case is criticized by the FPÖ, among other things. “Nehammer only blames the two Cobra officers while completely downplaying his wife’s role by apparently inciting her to drink while on duty. The dismay that the two officials have lost their jobs can therefore only be described as hypocritical,” said Christian Hafenecker, leader of the PVV faction of the corruption investigation commission ÖVP. The Nehammers are characterless. Hafenecker is happy “that at least the OM has picked up on the smell and is further investigating this affair, which only stinks of a cover-up in favor of a top politician.”
The public prosecutor’s office in Korneuburg is investigating the Cobra affair. The officers had already been transferred to the office after the incident.
