On Sunday, a large layer of ice collapsed on Mount Marmolada in the Italian Dolomites, killing at least four people. Numerous other people were buried and injured.
According to the mountain rescue service, the ice sheet broke off near Punta Rocca, along the climbing route to the Marmolada summit. Dozens of people who were on the scene were taken to the valley by the rescue team.
The danger of further avalanches is great. All alpine rescue stations in the Trentino region have been activated, five helicopters and dozens of rescue units are on their way to the affected area. The search for missing persons is also in full swing with the help of special equipment.
Temperature record on the Marmolada
The injured were taken to various hospitals. The President of Trentino, Maurizio Fugatti, reached the Dolomite city of Canazei, where an operations center was set up.
On Saturday, a temperature record of ten degrees was measured at the top of the Marmolada.
