Climate crisis ‘swallows’ Europe’s coastal areas

Date:

An American study calculates which places will be flooded by 2100 due to rising sea levels.

Amsterdam disappeared, Bordeaux uninhabitable, Hamburg under water. This horror scenario is based on the research results of the American organization Climate Central, which has included sea level rise, annual flooding and pollution in its current rate. Result: By 2050, 300 million people worldwide will be homeless. In Europe, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium have been particularly hard hit by floods. British coastal communities could be under water in less than 30 years.

130 million people could lose their homes
Sea levels can rise to 10.8 meters if temperatures rise four degrees above pre-industrial levels. Even a two-degree increase could cause 130 million people worldwide to lose their homes.

While numerous coastal areas struggle with rising sea levels, water is becoming scarce in Italy. Verona is rationing drinking water consumption, among other things, because of the ongoing drought. It is therefore prohibited until August 31 to use drinking water for irrigating gardens and sports facilities, washing cars and filling swimming pools. In case of non-compliance, a fine of up to 500 euros can be imposed.
