A white van with green number plates appeared suspicious on a patrol on Naßfeldstraße in Carinthia on Monday afternoon. When they stopped the vehicle, the driver jumped out of the car and fled on foot.
Immediately five patrols of the Hermagor police, three more patrols of the Carinthian police, two dog patrols and the police helicopter “Libelle” went looking for them. The smuggler was identified as a 36-year-old Iraqi from a copy of his passport, but the manhunt has so far been unsuccessful.
Officials found a total of 18 Bangladeshi men, ages 18 to 51, in the van who could survive for hours without adequate water and food while towing from Hungary to Italy. The men were taken to a detention station by the Police Inspectorate of Carinthia West and further investigations are being conducted by the State Police of Carinthia.
