Crisis deepens – Norwegian gas production cut by strike

Date:

Norwegian oil and gas workers have resigned amid concerns about Europe’s gas supply. “The strike has begun,” Audun Ingvartsen, chairman of the Lederne union, said Monday evening. As a result of Tuesday’s work stoppage, oil and gas production will be cut by 89,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd), of which gas production will reach 27,500 boepd, Norwegian energy company Equinor said.

According to a calculation by the Reuters news agency, a planned gradual reduction in production by Saturday could lead to the shutdown of nearly a quarter of Norwegian gas production and about 15 percent of oil production. The decision to reduce production ultimately rests with the operator Equinor. The group could not be reached for comment at first. The Norwegian government said it was monitoring the conflict “closely” and could end the strike in “extraordinary circumstances”.

The work stoppage comes at an inopportune time for EU countries as they are dependent on more gas from Norway due to a lack of Russian supplies.
