260,000 dead – mother’s mortality, often avoidable

Date:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 260,000 women, during and shortly after the birth of their child, died worldwide. A woman loses her life every two minutes because of complications with regard to pregnancy. Given bleeding, blood pressure problems and infections, there is often a lack of care by expert medical staff.

The figures on mother mortality are unacceptable. “Most of these deaths would be avoidable,” said it on the occasion of the World Health Day of today. The risk is particularly high in parts of Africa and in general in the particularly poor countries.

Four countries have almost half of the dead
Nowhere is the situation for women as bad as in Nigeria. According to the WHO 2023, around 75,000 women died alone around the birth of their child. High deaths also showed India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Pakistan. According to the information, these four countries registered almost half of all worldwide cases. With a total of 450 deaths in 2023, Europe is one of the regions with a particularly low mother mortality.

The situation is exacerbated by the many armed conflicts. In the affected regions, the risk of pregnant and young mothers is particularly high because of insufficient care, according to the WHO and other organizations in their report.

Who: the goal is missed at the current pace
Although the long -term comparison is positive – in 2000 the number of deaths as a result of pregnancy worldwide was an estimated 443,000 – but now there is a worrying trend regionally, the WHO warned.

In the United States, which previously proved a very low mother dying rate, the WHO observes an increasing trend in accordance with the figures of the National Health Authorities, a spokeswoman said. Only minor progress has been observed in Latin -America in recent years.

In the current development, the goal of the WHO to reduce the death of mothers below a level of 70 deaths on 100,000 births, it said. The WHO has called on to better inform women about the health risks, to facilitate access to medical care and not to save on specialized employees.
