The majority of drinks that are brought to the market as “child -friendly” are completely sugared. Especially products with “healthy” advertisements, such as added vitamins, often turned out to be the largest sugars. 79 percent of the drinks contain more than five grams per 100 milliliters, with 45 percent it is even at least eight grams.
Foodwatch Austria has checked 112 “children’s drinks” of supermarkets, drugstores and discounters for their sugar. The testers classify the result as “more than disturbing”.
An average “children’s drink” brings it to 24 grams of sugar per package – which corresponds to more than six pieces of cubes “Drinking packages and bubble tea with a maximum of 60 grams of sugar per package exceed the entire recommended daily dose for children more than three -time.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that less than five percent of the daily energy intake of sugar should come to children. That is 19 grams a day for four to seven -year -olds. This value is often exceeded with the consumption of only one of the “children’s drinks” investigated.
Obesity already at primary school age
High sugar consumption in childhood is associated with many health risks, the risk of overweight and obesity is increasing. In Austria, 34 percent of boys and 26 percent of girls at primary school age have too heavy, of which 16 percent of boys and eight percent of girls are considered obese.
“KRACHERL TAX” required
Foodwatch calls for a “crash load” as countermeasures, a ban on applying unhealthy food to children, the mandatory Nutri score -identification and an age limit for energy drinks.
