This year’s flu wave in Austria has ended. “The Austria-wide activity of the flu viruses in calendar week 15 fell below the epidemic level,” said virologist Monika Redlberger-Fritz.
The number of new infections with Influenza B (Victoria) also fell considerably, the Medical University said in a broadcast on Monday. In the season, around 10,000 people reported sick every week because of the flu.
This time the season was unusually long, “although incidental cases can be expected for some time”. The circulating viruses would have met the virus tribes that were included in the vaccinations. Vaccination was offered for the first time since the previous year for all people in Austria.
The new infections have also fallen in most other regions of Europe, but no goal has yet been achieved. The American authorities also reported a falling trend and “a late phase with simultaneous flu A and B (Victoria) activity.”
Unlike a flu infection, the flu suddenly starts. Symptoms are high fever, shivers, headache and body pain and cough. The infection can take a maximum of two weeks without treatment.
