Pray for Ukraine – Pope in Malta: Mass with thousands of people

Date:

On the second day of his trip to Malta, Pope Francis celebrated mass for thousands of people and called for prayers for Ukraine. “Let us pray for peace and remember the humanitarian tragedy of the tortured Ukraine,” the head of the Roman Catholic Church said Sunday in Floriana – a suburb of the capital Valletta – at the end of mass. The country is still being bombarded by this “sacrilegious war”.

In his sermon, Francis criticized hypocrisy in the Church and spoke of a “worm of hypocrisy” that could creep in. People pretend to be good and decent and only care about the mistakes of others than their own, he explained.

Some 20,000 people came to the church celebration, according to the Vatican, but local authorities in the predominantly Catholic country estimate the number of participants to be lower.

With the Popemobile through the cheering crowd
On Sunday morning, the Holy Father drove past the cheering crowds seated in his Popemobile. The day before, the 85-year-old was still in the Pope’s famous vehicle. The Argentinian has been struggling with knee problems for a long time, which makes it visibly difficult for him to walk, especially when climbing stairs.
