A tragic mountain drama took place in the North Cascades in the US state of Washington: three climbers fell into their death, a fourth man seriously survived and managed to get help despite internal injuries.
On Sunday, the four experienced climbers in the Noordcascades dived from an altitude of almost 60 meters when relegation in the mountain massif of the northern Winters rushers. According to the local authorities, all four men were bound by the same point of security when it was released from the rock wall.
Crasheder drove 100 kilometers for an emergency call
The three men, 36, 47 and 63, died on the scene of the accident. The fourth climber survived the crash – although he initially did not know how seriously he was injured. After the incident, he managed to free himself from the steep, snowy terrain alone.
He walked a few kilometers back to the nearest car, drove about 100 kilometers west to Newhalem and put the emergency call on a public mint telephone. It was only later that it turned out that he had sustained serious internal injuries.
A fuse point failed – Three lives end
The accident occurred during the descent via the so -called early winter Couloir, a steep gutter among the striking rock formations Noord and South Early Winters Spire. The men apparently stopped their climb because of an approaching weather.
According to David Yarnell, deputy sheriff in the Okanogan district, all four climbers were confirmed to one security point – this is a procedure that is “not recommended”; An unusual and ultimately fatal mistake.
Conservation Point simply gave
It is still the subject of the investigation whether the anchor was a pre -installed anchoring or material. However, it is clear that the security point has not solved the burden.
After the fall of about 60 meters deep, the men slid a rocky gutter, partly covered with snow, about 60 more meters. The equipment that was later found on the scene of the accident – including ropes, carabiner hooks and climbing tires – must now be checked for possible defects.
Rescue in difficult terrain
Rescue workers from the Okanogan County and volunteers from the local mountain rescue reached the remote accident place to the west of the village of Mazama around 11.30 am because of the technically demanding site, a helicopter redding team was also asked as support.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been publicly announced. However, the authorities confirmed that all four men from the Renton region arrived in the state of Washington.
