A week ago, employees in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein found a huge dangerous turtle. Since then, “Gabi” has lived in a reception center. But who suspended the animal? The animal welfare organization PETA requires instructions.
The workers found the animal in a channel in North German Kellinghusen. The station manager of the Wildlife and Species Protection Center in Sparrieshoop, Christian Erdmann, said that the tortoise of twelve kilograms of vulture, which came to light during a chess cleaning, was with a reasonable certainty. He took the animal under his care – and gave him a name: “Gabi”.
“Gabi” could stay there until mediation. It’s in good health. “Who knows how long she lived in the sturgeon. There are enough food there” – such as fishing, scratching, snails and ducks.
Reward of 500 euros
Now the animal welfare organization PETA is looking for the owner. A reward of 500 euros was suspended for useful information. “We ask for instructions that such an animal recently had,” said Peta specialist Peter Höffken of the DPA press agency. And he added: “Such an animal does not escape by itself.” Unfortunately it often happens that people uncover dangerous animals.
The police warns of caution
“There is a national ban on these dangerous turtles,” said Erdmann. Almost exactly a year ago, a walker discovered such a reptile in Baden-Württemberg on an unpaved road. The police then warned of caution in vulture turtles. Because of their great corrosive power, they may be able to break people and animals.
The Basel Zoo writes to the Short Turtles: “Your jaw is so strong that you can bite a broomstick. A human finger would be about the same challenge for your jaw as for our one salt bar.”
