In a popular pizzeria in Washington, the US Department of Homeland Protection -official was used in early May. The purpose of the raid was to control work permits or the conquering of illegal immigrants without identification papers.
The incident caused great uncertainty among employees and raises questions about the legal basis of such measures. Also because there was no search. Only later did civil servants returned with a formal notification of inspection, reports the manager of the affected pizza chain Pupatella.
Difficult course against immigration
The campaign was part of a more extensive initiative as part of President Trump’s limiting immigration policy. This describes illegal immigration as an “invasion” and is increasingly focusing on industries such as gastronomy, in which many migrants work without papers.
In the Washington area alone, 189 people without a home permit were arrested between 6 and 9 May, according to the Immigration Authority ICE for “targeted assessment of foreign criminals”.
Employees stay away from work
The fear of a shortage of employees is growing in the light of such missions. A restaurant owner reports anonymously that many of his employees no longer seem to work for fear after his company became the goal of a raid.
Pupatella management is now trying to prepare for further incidents. “We have ensured that all branch managers know what rights the restaurant and every employee have,” says it.
The company fears that the unnamed visit will not soon forget the pizza makers and waiters. “Let’s be honest if someone appears in uniform with weapons and bulletproof cardigans, (…) It is disturbing.”
