The international banana giant Chiquita has announced the release of thousands of employees in Panama who stopped for almost a month for a pension reform.
The unjustified work work in operational centers and farms created economic losses of at least $ 75 million (around 66 million euros), the company said.
According to media reports, around 4,900 employees are influenced by the dismissal without a permanent contract. The company has a total of around 7,000 employees in the Middle -American country.
Strikes against pension reform
Since April 28, banana workers have participated in a strike of different trade unions against a pension reform. Together with teachers, indigenous and construction workers, they also protest against a recently signed security agreement between Panama and the US, which makes an elevated American military presence on the Panama Canal possible.
