Studies suggested earlier that the metallic earthy core is leaking and some volcanic stones contain material. An analysis of volcanic stone from Hawaii now offers the strongest evidence for this scientific assumption to date.
Until now it provided the strongest proof that material actually escaped from the earthly core and was printed on the surface by hot Maclian streams. “This data set will be an important basis for the geochemical community that reveals the mantle of the earth and the history of the earth,” says Forrest Horton, geochemist in the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts.
Previous studies in which the relative frequencies of certain isotope versions of the same element with different atomic weights were investigated, suggested that some volcanic stone material contained from the earth. They pointed to material that comes from an exchange that takes place approximately 2900 kilometers below the earth’s surface on the border between the core, which mainly consists of iron and nickel, and the rocky earthly jacket.
Previous indications were “not clear”
However, this earlier isotopic information is “not clear”, says the isotoopchemist Matthias Willbold of the University of Göttingen in Germany. In search of more valid evidence, he and his team therefore concentrated on Ruthenium (RU), a rare metal that looks like the platinum and is known that it is concentrated in the earthly core.
Compared to the coat of the earth, the earthly core contains a slightly larger amount of a certain rutheniumisoop, the 100ru. With new procedures, the team around Willbold now found an unusually high 100ru signal in above-ground volcanic stones. This can only be explained by the fact that the material from which the volcanic stones are formed comes from the border between the core of the earth and the mantle of the earth, according to the scientists.
The researchers measure the relative amounts of ruthenium atoms with the atomic weights 100, 101 and 102 in rock samples from Hawaii, which according to Willbold’s information is an ideal place to look for rock that could come from the deepest cloak. Because according to the researcher: the islands of Hawaii are being built on a “hotspot”, on which magma, which probably comes from the deepest cloak of the earth, is deleted by the crust of the earth.
Nils Messling of the Geochemistry department and Isotope Geology of the University of Göttingen explained: “When the first results arrived, we realized that we literally encountered gold. Our data confirmed that material from the core of the earth, including gold and other precious metals, truddles in the mantle of the above.”
“Earth Core is not as close as accepted”
Willbold of the same department adds: “Our results not only show that the earthly core is not soolated, as is previously assumed. We can now also prove that huge amounts of very hot mantle material-very-very-hundred billions of tons of basalt rock rise from the pair of pair of limit to the earth’s surface such as Hawaii.”
The valuable stocks of gold and other precious metals, on which we are urgently dependent on areas such as the renewable energies, can therefore come from the earthly core. “Whether the processes that we observe today have also taken place in the past must still be investigated. The findings open a completely new perspective on the development of the inner dynamics of our planet,” concludes Messling in the study, which is now published in the “Nature” magazine.
