A spectacular accident in the US state of Washington has led to an enormous bee crowd: an estimated 250 million bees escaped from a fallen truck on Friday. The authorities immediately called on the population to avoid the raves of the stabbing insects.
The truck, which had invited approximately 31,750 kilograms of active honey bees, was destroyed in a street near the Canadian border. Emergency services received support from various experienced beekeepers to cope with the situation.
Rescue operation for the bees
“The goal is to save as many bees as possible,” explained the whatcom County (WCSO) Sheriff Office shortly after the incident. The scene of the accident remained closed for the duration of the rescue operation. “250 million bees are now free,” wrote the WCSO, warning: “Avoid the area because of the possibility that bees escape and corpses.”
Bees must now find their queens
Beekeepers worked hand in hand with the police to restore the destroyed beekeepers. “The plan is to enable the bees to collect again in their beehives and find their queen,” says the WCSO. This must be done “within the next 24-48 hours”.
In a later update on Friday, the police thanked the “beautiful community of beekeepers”, because “more than two dozen” helpers had appeared for the rescue operation. “By the morning most bees should have returned to their beehives,” said the toilet on Facebook.
Video -Material that was shared by the police showed huge swarms of bees around the fallen truck:
While some beekeepers only produce honey, many others rent their beehives to farmers who need the insects to pollinate their crops.
